2023 Father Connie Dougherty Memorial Scholarship Application

Brief Description:

The Father Connie Scholarship Fund was established in 1975 as a perpetual trust to further the education of deserving young people of all race, color, creed, sex and national origin.  Father Connie Dougherty was known in Sarasota for supporting high schools and youth programs.  Father Connie's devotion and service to Sarasota County led to him creating the Father Connie Dougherty Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund was created to help Sarasota County students reach their potential.

To be eligible to apply, students must be under the age of 24 and graduates or graduating from a Sarasota County public or private school.  Students must be pursuing further education at a college, university, or institution of higher learning.

Each completed application is reviewed by a Committee made up of past recipients and relatives of past recipients of this scholarship.  The Committee is seeking applicants who meet the ideals of Father Connie and display a history of service and a desire to help others.

Application Information:



Special Note: This application is only available to students who:

  1. graduated or will graduate from a high school in Sarasota County
  2. will be under the age of 24 as of December 31, 2023

*No other students should apply using this form as all ineligible applications will be automatically denied.



Application Requirements: This application has required documents

  1. Your transcript.  Transcripts must include your name, grades for all courses taken, and cumulative GPAs.  Unofficial transcripts and screenshots of portals are accepted as long as they have that information.  If currently in High School your transcript must have grades from your first quarter in 2022  If you are currently in college your transcript must have grades from Fall 2022.
  2. Your resume.  Resumes should include work experience, extracurriculars, honors, leadership roles, etc.
  3. Three Letters of Recommendation  Letters of Recommendation cannot be from family members.
  4. Your FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR).  FAFSA SARs must be the full document (9-11 pages).  If you are unable to complete your FAFSA prior to the application deadline or if you have other reasons for not submitting this document, then contact us at scholarships@cfsarasotaorg to discuss an alternative source of financial documentation.  All conversations on this matter will be kept confidential.
  5. Two essays are required.  The first prompt is to write 100-250 words introducing yourself and your education goals.  The second prompt is to write 100-250 words describing individuals who have impacted your life and explain how your education will impact the lives of others.

Optional Documents:
  1. Additional Attachments are optional.  If you have anything else you wish to share with the reviewers there is an Additional Attachment option.  This can be a second Letter of Recommendation, an artwork, a writing sample, a project, etc.

After You Submit Your Application:
  1. After you submit your application, you will receive an automatic email from admin@communityforce.com.  Your uploaded documents will be checked in by Community Foundation of Sarasota County staff within two weeks of you submitting your application.  If any document is incorrect or missing information you will be contacted via email from admin@communityforce.com or scholarships@cfsarasota.org.  These emails and the time to correct issues are time sensitive so we recommend checking your email at least twice a week for two weeks after you submit it as it can take up to two weeks to check in application documents.  If you do not hear about document issues from our staff by March 21st your application is complete.
  2. All final candidates will be interviewed by the committee.  Any contact for additional information and interviews for this scholarship fund will be via email and take place in mid April.  Email communications will come from scholarships@cfsarasota.org.
  3. All scholarship determinations will be finalized April 30th.  You will be contacted via email by scholarships@cfsarasota.org on April 30th with scholarship determinations.
